Bibit Volume 1

Compilation of works by I Made Subandi (Subandi) and his students at Sanggar Ceraken and SMK 3 Sukawati (KOKAR). Also includes the traditional piece Unduk.
The first volume in the Bibit (seedling) series highlights talented and aspiring composers mentored by I Made Subandi—an internationally renowned artist that has made a positive contribution to the attitudes and aesthetic trajectories of an entire generation. All of the works on this release are performed by members of his own Sanggar Ceraken or students at the high school of performing arts SMK 3 Sukawati (KOKAR)—where he has taught for more than twenty years. Together, these works reveal the extent of his influence and hint at the future of Balinese gamelan that his unique approach to the arts is helping create. Also includes I Made Subandi’s epic Wisnu Werdhi and the pelegongan piece Unduk arranged for Ceraken’s five-tone anglkung.

1. Embang
Embang portrays a universe full of the mysteries of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, whose supreme power governs the dynamics of the universe itself. The movement of time is visible in the cycle of the full moon (purnama) and new moon (tilem) and between them is a void (embang) lasting 15 days. The cycle of these moons and the void between them inspired this exploration in innovative music, which I call Embang.

2. Anomali (Selendro)
Anomali (Selendro) is an exploratory piece of music inspired by the late Slamet Abdul Syukur’s minimax ideas. At the center of the piece is a set of pencon (horizontal suspended gongs) played by three musicians and what results is maximal music made from minimal material means.

3. Susu Kembang
The most beautiful period is adolescence. The saddest period is adolescence. The period we most enjoy remembering is adolescence. The period we most hope to forget is adolescence. Because we endure great turbulence during adolescence, if we are properly guided we will become responsible individuals, but if not, then a bleak future awaits.

Angklung or Angka Lung is identical to the number four, including the number’s very shape. Four is also the number of keys on a typical angklung instrument. Angka Luhung is a good letter, a good thought, and a good idea.

7. Wisnu Werdhi
In the dance Wisnu Werdi the central dance figure signifies the all-loving preserver. Wisnu is the symbol of preservation and Werdi refers to development. Thus, the dance exemplifies our desire to achieve the qualities of the compassionate preserver Vishnu: prestige, charisma, and firmness. Much like water, in one instant Vishnu can embody all three. Water is calm, clear, cool, and highly coveted by human life as well as other creatures because life would be impossible without it. Sometimes water takes form as a flood or tsunami, and this is when Vishnu’s non-negotiable nature is revealed. All of these qualities are also present in nurses and midwives working in patient care.
